To A Palm Tree

Graceful lady of the noble winds,
flamingo of the flatlands,
when you sway and loll
your body sings, as does your soul.

Gesture of quiet prayer
or prelude to quick flight,
through your spiky headdress
heaven seems to flow.

To A Little Mayan Badger (in the archaeological museum at Tuxtla)

Covering your giggles
with your paw
you come bouncing down the centuries
in curves of delicate stone.

Let the dark walls that enclose you
shatter and fall down!
Tumble into the welcoming lap
of your mother the earth.

On the wind, yes, on the wind
the music of tiny bells
as you join the eternal games
of the children of forever.
