(Characters: Paula, Margaret
Setting: Emergency stairwell, Opera House during blackout. 10:00 p.m.)

Paula: Does anybody read Joost van den Vondel these days.

Margaret: I know I don’t.

Paula: But if he asks.

Margaret: And if he asks.

Paula: He very well might.

Margaret: Well let him.

Paula: What is it you’ve been reading.

Margaret: Just like that.

Paula: Just like that.

Margaret: Well say ‘oh this and that’.

Paula: Que sais-je.

Margaret: As easy a question as the answer zips blunt.

Paula: Nothing.

Margaret: Nothing.

Paula: A big fat crybaby nothing.

Margaret: But don’t you think it’s more out of a sense of.

Paula: Don’t confuse me what was.

Margaret: He’s probably too self-absorbed to care.

Paula: I interest him though.

Margaret: Ooh la la.

Paula: I think he adores me I’m pretty sure.

Margaret: Then make him earn your companionship.

Paula: He already has.

Margaret: I don’t mean that goose.

Paula: Well then what exact.

Margaret: He’s lolled his tongue in Undine’s well and keeps coming back for more.

Paula: Still I’d like to be able to say something that doesn’t make me look like a total.

Margaret: Okay let’s do this.

Paula: You have some ideas.

Margaret: No just one.

Paula: That’s better than none.

Margaret: It’s all you’ll need.

Paula: Tell me.

Margaret: Give me a kiss first.

Paula: There.

Margaret: Now sit down and close your eyes and relax and I’ll tell you the prettiest story that’s ever been told.
