Bruegel’s Monkeys

By January 8, 2012January 22nd, 2016Writing

Fine-chained, melancholic,
amid their bits of
nut and dried fruit.
Ships passing in the distance,
eggwhite sky
veined at the edges.
For a clear view
they must look past
the saut-de-loup,
prisoners above an enamel lake,
speckled with miniature galleons,
sailing due east
into the fiery world.
